A Study Group of the Germany Philately Society

This website is dedicated to the study of German stamps in the immediate post World War II era.
What a time of transition it was. In thirty years, the German people had endure the hardship and and loss of a generation of young men in the blood shed of World War I, the failure of the Wiemar republic, and their thrust into abject poverty by the inflationary era of the 1920s.
Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come. Next came the rise of the Nazis with their near immediate persecution of their enemies and those of Jewish descent. While nationalistic pride briefly rose in Germany during the first years of the Nazi regime for those unaffected by persecution, this quickly gave way to some of the most horrific sufferings ever endured by mankind. During WWII, Hitler started his ghoulish two front war, subjected his own people to the abject brutality of the Holocaust, all while seeing Germany literally being destroyed by Allied invasion.

The post World War II era represented both new hope for the future of Germany, but presented new challenges as well. While the atrocities of Nazi Germany were completely defeated, Allied forces subsequently divided Germany into four zones: American, British, French, and Russian.

Collecting German stamps during this era allows for the philatelist (stamp collector) to follow this fascinating era. Different German states produced stamps during this era along with the different occupying forces, all showcasing the changing political and social environment. All in all, philately provides a window into the political intrigue of this era.

This website showcases the research done by those of the Post World War II Study and Research Group, a part of the Germany Philatelic Society from 1969-85. While not complete, many of their journals are posted on this website, so that all may enjoy the fruits of thier labor.

We do have one request: As you may see in our library, we do not pretend to have every issue of the Post World War II Study and Research Group Bulletin.

We need your help. If you have old issues not listed in our library, please contact me at ctkolker@mail.com. And, if you have old stamps, postcards, propaganda cards or postal material, just scan them and send them to me, and we will get them on this website.

Thank you!
